Why replace the downlock pins?

Cessna retractable-gear aircraft service experience has shown that worn downlock pins in the landing gear downlock actuator can reduce proper over-center locking of the landing gear. When the pins wear, the downlock hook may not fully engage, allowing the gear to unlock under load during taxi, rollout, or landing. This can result in the aircraft dropping to the ground, which can cause safety concerns and costly structural damage. To address this issue, Cessna released service bulletin SEB95-20, identifying downlock pin wear as a contributing factor and introducing an alternative pin design intended to reduce the risk of gear collapse.
