Engine Primers and Enamels

  • Are these products sold individually, or only in kits?

    Individually. There's no minimum quantity required for ordering.

  • Can I use SF1000-A/SF1100-A primer under this engine enamel?

    These are two separate product lines launching in the same release, not a documented primer-and-topcoat system. This engine enamel's validated substrates are properly treated steel or aluminum, epoxy primer, or etching primer. If you have a specific application question about pairing these products, check with Superflite technical support before use.

  • Can I use these aerosols for a full repaint, or just touch-up?

    They're formulated and packaged for touch-up and small-area work. For a full repaint, a professional shop applying larger-format product is the better fit.

  • Can this primer be used on aluminum?

    Yes, but adhesion is rated "fair" on aluminum versus "excellent" on steel. Test adhesion on your specific aluminum substrate before full application.

  • Can this primer be used on galvanized metal or plastic?

    No. It's not recommended for galvanized, galvaneal, or plastic/fiberglass substrates.

  • Does SF2200-A match the existing SF2200-1 quart can color?

    Yes, SF2200-A aerosol black matches SF2200-1.

  • Do I need to observe a recoat or topcoat window with this primer?

    Do I need to observe a recoat or topcoat window with this primer?

  • Do I need to observe a recoat window with this engine enamel?

    Recoat before 15 minutes or after 120 hours. Dry-through time is 72 hours.

  • Do I still need to mix reducer with the aerosol engine enamel?

    No. The aerosol format is ready to spray as-is. The quart cans (SF2000-1, SF2100-1, SF2200-1, etc.) still require a 10 to 15% reducer cut for air spray application.

  • How hot can this engine enamel get before it's a problem?

    It's rated for intermittent heat exposure up to 600°F.

  • Is Superflite aerosol primer a suitable replacement for Tempo A701/A702?

    Yes. Engineering has confirmed SF1000-A and SF1100-A are a suitable functional replacement for Tempo A702 (green) and Tempo A701 (yellow) respectively

  • Is this primer lead or chrome free?

    Yes, both SF1000-A and SF1100-A are lead and chrome free, and rated under 3.5 VOC.

  • What safety equipment is required to apply these aerosols?

    A properly fitted air-purifying respirator with organic cartridges and a particulate filter (or a fresh-air supplied respirator), eye protection, gloves, and protective clothing.

  • What should I do before applying any of these products?

    Wash the surface with mild detergent, rinse, dry, then sand and featheredge where needed. Mask off or protect areas from overspray before spraying.

  • What's the color match tolerance on Superflite engine enamel?

    Exact match, 0.5 DE or better.

  • What's the difference between SF1000-A and SF1100-A?

    Color only. SF1000-A is green, SF1100-A is yellow. Both are the same single-component, non-lifting alkyd primer.

  • What's the in-service temperature limit for this primer?

    200°F.

  • What's the Tempo equivalent for each engine enamel color?

    SF2200-A Black replaces Tempo A241, SF2300-A Red replaces Tempo A1120, SF2400-A Yellow replaces Tempo A239, SF2500-A White replaces Tempo A1109. SF2000-A (Continental Gold) and SF2100-A (Lycoming Grey) are existing colors in the same series

  • What surfaces is this engine enamel validated for?

    Properly treated steel or aluminum, and surfaces already coated with epoxy primer or etching primer.
